Races are great publicity and I'd love to see Tesla put a CT into one. Hopefully they get their fair shake and don't get highlighted exclusively if there's a failure.

I've mentioned before here that if any EV in these exhibition races has an issue at any point the media will probably crop out the normal ICE vehicles that fail so they can sling mud at EVs.

That truck of theirs looks crazy stiff to be effective in a race like this. We will see. peace

I'm a big fan of this truck and love Lordstown's up-front focus on fleets (gives them key locations for charging infrastructure and service centers instead of trying to cover the map to start). Feels smart to me.

I have had questions about the durability of hub motors as opposed to axial, since the wheels/tires get the brunt of the abuse.

Hope they do well and I would also love to watch.

Hub motors suck for handling since the motors (heavy) are at the wheel. They take a pounding and limit the response of the suspension. I'm a hard pass.

Totally seems like it would be counterintuitive to me. Looking forward to seeing what happens in the race, though.

They are indeed heavy, I still love new technology and would be open to the idea. Aptera is also going to use HUB motors as well as some other EV platform makers like the recently announced REE and Magna partnership. Keep in mind the assembly does also contain the braking system.

Most fundamental difference I see here is that Aptera is VERY MUCH a street vehicle (and it looks awesome). Lordstown is going after a durability-minded market.

Tesla appear to have un-meme’d its founder tweet earlier. The Baja tweet featuring a Cybertruck now sounds like chest pounding.

Tesla is maybe going full BMW which has never factory raced a single car.

Modern hub motors are no heavier than old steel rims.

So no, they don't do any of that.

Does your Zero motorbike have hub motors?
Or, my Alta EXR? Tesla's? Rivians? CT? Nope.
It's a bad idea on any high performance machine (i.e. truck in an off-road race).

Aptera is a dainty road car... scooters are cheap... Probably ok engineering decisions there.
Maybe the lordstown is primarily a city truck? That would make more sense.

How do we know its a bad idea though.. That seems like just an assumption. I have never seen it done and I believe that's purely because mainstream electric motors have made it possible. We will find out soon enough!
