Nasa SLS (Space Launch System) rockets configurations are still shy in lifting, height and capabilities than SpaceX Starship.
If Starship launches and they are able to retrieve both halfs, the SLS, and damned near every other launch vehicle becomes obsolete. Not like your 1979 Pinto obsolete, if you’ve got a working Pinto, it can still drive around on public roads and does car things. More like Model T obsolete. So rare and expensive to drive it feels wasteful and unsafe to use it on public roads.Unfortunately, SLS and Starship both have not yet had a successful launch. Well, no unsuccessful one either so that's a positive. But I really don't think of them as being available yet since they have not had a successful launch. Aspirationally, yes, they will be larger than all the other launch systems in that graphic. But at the moment they both need at least a little asterisk on their entry.
The genius of Starship is 2 fold.
It’s 100% reusable. The value of this is massive. Musk compares it to flying a jet and throwing it away each time you land it. Tens (or hundreds) of millions of dollars saved each launch.
The second is less understood and less known. SpaceX is not just building a rocket. They are building a rocket factory. SpaceX is producing 10 or more of these right now and they are building out equipment and jigs to build many more.
This scaled/ bulk assembly means even if their first launch fails completely, they have another in the queue to take it’s place within weeks or days. They figure out what was wrong with the previous model, fix it, apply the fix to the assembly line, and they keep moving forward quickly.
By the time SLS is done, SpaceX will have built a factory capable of producing multiple Starships per year.
They were talking about 3 launches per week… ? And eventually 3 per day ? ?.
Even 1/ week would be amazing. Currently they launch once every 11 days or so, but Starship is much much bigger.
